Second suspect arrested connected to McDonald’s armed robbery; makes first court appearance
The second suspect involved in an armed robbery that took place at a Yuma McDonald’s is behind bars.
22-year-old Christopher Young Jr. has been arrested and booked on felony charges of aggravated robbery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Young and the first suspect, 22-year-old Anthony Mendoza, were allegedly involved in an armed robbery at a McDonald’s on Fourth Avenue in Yuma.
Investigation revealed that an armed robbery took place in the McDonald’s parking lot on Friday, January 13. Undisclosed items were taken from the victim, two shots were fired from a handgun, and both suspects fled on foot. Mendoza was identified and arrested that same afternoon, and local police have been searching for Young.
“Through the investigation our detectives learned the name of the second suspect,” explains Yuma Police Department Sergeant Lori Franklin. “We have been actively looking for him and he was found early this morning, about 12:30 in the morning. and he was booked and arrested for the aggravated robbery and the aggravated assault charges.”
Christopher Young Jr. was in court Friday for two cases, as the McDonald’s incident was not his first suspected run-in with the law.
“We have dealt with him in the past, yes we have,” says Sergeant Franklin.
According to court documents, a warrant has been out for Young’s arrest as he also faces drug allegations from November 16, 2016. Young was charged with possession and/or use of a dangerous drug, and possession and/or use of drug paraphernalia–both felony charges. Court records show Young was also charged with misdemeanor theft after stealing a bicycle on November 10, 2016.
Judge Gregory Stewart ruled that as of now, Young faces the same bond as Mendoza–a $75,000 cash only bond–but says that public safety assessment information shows there may be cause to have a set bond greater than Mendoza’s. Young faces a $10,000 bond for the drug allegations.
Young is scheduled to appear back in court Tuesday, January 24, for both cases to determine if any formal charges will be filed against him.
