Calexico Black and White art exhibit promotes better communication

The Carmen Durazo Cultural Arts Center in Calexico is holding its tenth annual Black and White art exhibit this week.

Calexico Community Services Director Sandra Tauller said, “It’s an international show. We invite people from Mexicali and from Imperial County.”

Over 120 art pieces from 60 artists from both sides of the border are showcased.

“Art improves the quality of life. So, we’re always looking for ways in which to highlight art, different forms of art,” Tauller said.

Imperial Valley painter Eddie Schiffer said black and white art helps artists send a clear message.

“You’re able to express more freely without having to – oh, does the skin tone look right? You just have two values and you stretch them as far as you can,” Schiffer said.

One local artist said his art has made it easier for him to talk to others.

“It’s literally just as simple as a sketch book. Some people will see it and go, can i look at your stuff?” Jose Ismael Alvarez said.

Another artist said her art is a way for her to talk to herself.

“If I’m feeling mad or stressed out, or happy or something i like to draw or paint or anything. It just depends on my mood,” Ashley Camacho said.

Long Beach artist Claudia Chavarria sums up the importance of art to her.

“A picture’s worth a thousand words,” Chavarria said.

The exhibit is open to the public till Thursday from 4 – 7 p.m.
