Two men almost hit by train as they slept near tracks
It was something train worker Larry Ram would not like to see again. Two men asleep near the railroad tracks and a train fast approaching them.
“This is like the first time I’ve actually seen something happen. I don’t want to see it again,” Ram said.
It happened Wednesday morning about 14 miles west of El Centro near Jefery Road and Evan Hewes Highway.
Ram said the men could have been undocumented immigrants.
“They were confused because they’ve been without food and water for a couple of days,” Ram said.
The train engineer gave out a warning for the men to clear the tracks.
“He activated the horn at the crossing before, which I guess woke up one of the guys,” Ram said.
A man was seen falling, according to Ram.
“He was clipped on one of his shoulders by the train. Engineer said he looked back in the mirror and seen the guy flying through the air,” Ram said.
The train came to a stop after the incident and somebody called 911.
Imperial County Sheriff’s Office said the two men were turned over to border patrol but gave no other information on the condition of the man clipped by the train.
“Luckily, they didn’t get seriously hurt or killed,” Ram said.
Ram gave some train-tracks advice that might save a person’s life.
“Stay away from tracks and trains. Look both ways. Don’t sleep on the tracks!” Ram explained.
