YPD urges drivers to be cautious on the road this holiday season
As the chaos of the holiday season comes to an end, frequent fender benders, traffic accidents and reckless driving has yet to see a halt.
According to Yuma Police Department – More traffic accidents occur during the winter and holiday seasons.
While the reason for the increase in accidents points to multiple factors – Ranging from road construction to weather conditions – Authorities say it’s commonly because of a yearly spike in people visiting the city of Yuma.
“It happens during this time of the year because we have the winter visitors,” Sgt. Lori Franklin said. “Everybody [has] their own habits from their own state, so it’s just a mixture of population, road construction and different driving habits.”
Although accidents occur more frequently over the holidays, authorities say they can be prevented as long as drivers practice safe driving and patience.
“Be more patient,” Franklin said. “[Though] it’s hard, just take a little extra time. It will cost you more time having to get your car repaired or possibly losing a life.”
Police also advise drivers to plan ahead and around traffic during this time of year.
“Allow for more time to get to your destination,” Franklin said. “You may start driving recklessly through traffic because you think you’re going to be late, but if you add that extra half an hour to your time, at least you know you’ll get there safer.”
