People brave rain to give to food drive

Rain could not keep dozens of people from donating food at Assembly Member Eduardo Garcia’s food drive on Wednesday.

City of El Centro Marcella Piedra called it an opportunity.

“Having the opportunity to share with maybe those that are not as fortunate as i am, to me it’s just sharing that blessing,” Piedra said.

The food is for Imperial Valley Food Bank that distributes it valley wide to needy families year round.

Imperial Valley Food Bank Executive Director Sarah Griffin said, “It’s important at all the time not just at Christmas.”

Assembly Member Garcia’s Representative Christian Nunez said this was just one of several food drives in the valley.

“This is important because the community can get together with the assembly member to help our local agencies that help the community to live better,” Nunez said.

El Centro resident Lupe Quintero said fighting hunger is everybody’s fight.

“The reason is there’s so much hunger here in Imperial County and we just want to help end that hunger,” Quintero said.

From 5:30 to 7 p.m. people braved the rain coming to State Street Coffee House to give their food donation for one reason in mind.

“Make a difference in a person’s life,” El Centro resident John Hernandez said.
