Calexico Police take kids on a Christmas shopping spree

Thirty Calexico kids were taken on a Christmas shopping spree on Thursday, thanks to the Calexico Police Department, City of Calexico and other local businesses.

First, the kids had breakfast with the officers. Then they were taken to the local Walmart in a police convoy. Santa Claus met them there and the shopping began.

Each kid had $150 dollars to buy the item of their choice with the help of an officer.

Calexico Police Sgt. Victor Legaspi said they’re not just there to serve and protect, but to be a friend to the community as well.

“This is important because we’re not only there to enforce laws or to arrest people. This is community ortho-policing. This is the other aspect of law enforcement, is to reach out to the community and assist them in whatever we can,” Legaspi said.

The 30 kids were carefully selected from needy families by the Calexico School District.
