El Centro’s new mayor says is ready for the challenge

Alex Cardenas became El Centro’s new mayor on Thursday. He said there’s a lot of work to be done.

“Right now we have a very significant and large project and that’s the aquatic center. It’s an eleven million dollar facility that’s going to bring some opportunities for our youth and our elderly community. And my job with that is to keep on track in terms of the timeline and the construction costs,” Cardenas said.

The aquatic center project will be groundbreaking in August of next year. Plans for a new police station are on the table, as well.

“Our current police station right now is in a building that was built in 1950,” Cardenas said.

And a library.

“New library that’s a need in our community,” Cardenas said.
Work to clean up downtown will continue.

“We have run numerous special details in regards to the downtown area and have cleaned it up,” Cardenas said.

He acknowledged the work and experience of current council members.

“Those folks are very seasoned council members, and to have them on my council and us working together is very, very important to our community,” Cardenas said.

Cardenas is excited about his first appointment as mayor and says success depends on the whole council working together.

“And that’s going to be done with our council; that’s going to be done with a strategic plan; and our goal again is to stay ahead of the curb in regards to the needs of our city,” Cardenas concluded.
