YPD officer gets hit on the head with a bottle; suspect still at large

A man allegedly hit a police officer in the head with a glass bottle during a traffic stop.

Yuma Police Department (YPD) officers say, Christian Michael Silva, 26, jumped out of the back seat of a car and hit the officer in the head with the glass bottle.

The incident happened just over a week ago, when the officer pulled the car over. When the officer walked up to the car, Silva jumped out the back seat and assaulted the officer, according to a press release posted on YPD’s Facebook page. Silva fled the scene on foot and has since been at large.

Despite the other passengers denying knowing Silva, officers were able to identify the suspect after investigating. Officers say they also found a sawed-off shotgun along with other firearms inside the car.

Now police are asking for the public’s help finding Silva.

Silva is described as Hispanic, bald, brown eyes, 5 feet 6 inches and weighing 138 pounds. He also has “SOMA” tattooed across his chest and mutiple tattoos on the back of his neck, head, arms and hands.

Silva is also wanted for outstanding felony warrants and multiple non-extraditable misdemeanor warrants.

Anyone with information on Silva’s whereabouts is encouraged to contact Detective Ernesto Rangel at 928-373-5000 Ext. 6160 – rangele@yumaaz.gov, the Yuma Police Department at (928) 373-4700 or 78-CRIME to remain anonymous. There is a $1,000 reward for information leading to Silva’s arrest.
