Officer involved shooting in Yuma

The Yuma Police Department said an officer was placed on administrative leave following an officer involved shooting Saturday morning.

YPD said the incident happened at 1:58 a.m. in the 400 Block of S. Madison Ave. YPD said the officers knocked on the front door and announced their presence attempting to make contact with the occupant.

Officers said after numerous attempts at the front door to make contact with the occupant, one officer walked around the residence still attempting to make contact with the occupant, while the other officer spoke with a witness. As the officer who went around the residence came back to the front of the building, the man exited the residence with a shotgun and went through the motions used to chamber a round.

Police then said the officer took cover behind a vehicle and the occupant moved towards the officer with the shotgun and raised the weapon. The officer fired his duty weapon and shot the occupant. Officers administered first aid on the subject until rescue arrived.

YPD said the occupant, a 50-year-old man, was taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center where he is in stable condition.

No Yuma Police Department officers were injured during this incident. The officer who fired his duty weapon has been placed on administrative leave per department policy.

The Yuma Police Department is conducting the investigation into the shooting.
