Salvation Army looking for donations this holiday season

The Salvation Army is dedicated to helping those who are in need all year long and with cold temperatures here they are asking for the community’s help to keep the less fortunate warm.

The Army is asking for blanket, coat, sleeping bag and hygiene care kit donations.

Despite some homeless people sleeping in surrounding shelters, many of them continue to sleep in parks and streets, according to Salvation Army volunteers.

The Salvation Army center on Fifth Avenue and Park Street also has a “hospitality house” which can shelter close to 20 people but it is only available in emergency situations.

Captain Vivianna Viquez says they will also be holding their “Blankets from the Heart” event this December.

“It’s for donations we’re receiving blankets, sleeping bags, coats, food, toys, all of those things that we use for the holiday season are welcomed too,” said Viquez.

The Salvation Army also offers free meals Monday through Friday serving close to 130 people daily and captains say they are always in need of volunteers.
