Topic of the Day: DAPL Protests in Yuma

13 On Your Side wants to know your thoughts:

It’s become one of the largest gatherings of American-Indians and environmentalists in recent history. Mandan, North Dakota has become ground zero for one of the largest protests to date; for months protesters calling themselves “water protectors” have been attempting to stop the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline.

The pipeline which spans four states is just over a 1,000 miles long and is nearly complete. Energy Transfer Partners is overseeing the project and has had to bring in private security and enlist the help of local law enforcement; turning the protest into a militarized battleground.

Officers have been using non-lethal armament which includes mace, pepper spray and rubber bullets in an effort to keep the project on schedule. On one side tribes claim that the construction of the pipeline threatens their water and has destroyed native sacred land; on the other side a multi-billion dollar business who say they’ve broken no laws.
