Thanksgiving lunch hosted in honor of veterans and underprivilaged families

The Hacienda Scholarship fund provided a lunch for underprivileged families and veterans in Brawley on Thursday.

Our news team learned that it is a tradition that is being carried on in honor of the person and family who started it.

“Six years ago there was this lady that did it in honor of her husband who passed away. So we helped her do a dinner, it was a successful dinner. She left when up north, and so we continued the lunch in her honor of veterans and underprivileged people,” said Mario Castaneda, Owner of Hacienda Snack Bar and Catering.

The lunch was held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Volunteers rotated in shifts to serve food, pass out pies and hand out blankets.

“Basically what we did is that we asked the kids at our school to donate a blanket new or used and we brang it over here for the people that don’t really have opportunities and they come here,” said Jared Carpio, ABS President at Myron D. Witter Elementary School.

The students also explained why it is important to give back.

“Well because first of all its thanksgiving and no one should feel alone and they should feel like they comfort for themselves after thanksgiving,” explained Daniel Camillo, ASB Secretary at Myron D. Witter Elementary School.

“I wish we could get a little bit more people to come, i know that there are some people that are not able to come but there are flyers that go out and if they can’t come we can deliver. It’s a great feeling, not only because they’re coming but because volunteers that are here that take time away from their family to be here to help us so it’s really a wonderful feeling both ways,” added Castaneda.

Castaneda also tells our team that he plans to carry on this tradition next year and the many years to come. If you would like to volunteer, all you have to do is simply show up or visit the Hacienda Snack Bar and Catering restaurant for more information.
