Dog owners allowed to have 12 dogs, with kennel.

An ordinance that will soon go into effect will allow dog owners to have more than six dogs per household, however they’ll have to provide a kennel for them.

San Luis Ordinance Number 358 allows dog owners to have up to 12 dogs as long as they’re inside a kennel. The ordinance is designed to make sure all dogs are cared for at home. Owners are also required to have a permit when caring for that amount of four-legged friends. Fees for the permit will be part of upcoming city council agendas.

“From past experiences that we’ve had in this community, when we’ve made contact with citizens who have more than 10 up to 20 dogs in one property, there’s issues with malnutrition, as well as the smell is bad and there’s complaints from the neighbors,” said Marcos Santana, San Luis Police Department.

Ordinance 358 goes into effect in April 1, 2017.
