Foundation looks for Giffords shooting memorial funds

The effort to build a large memorial for the victims and survivors of a Tucson mass shooting that targeted former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords needs more money.

The January 8th Memorial Foundation is airing public service announcements around the state imploring people to donate for the planned downtown Tucson memorial.

One PSA features the father of Giffords aide Gabe Zimmerman recalling how he learned his son had died following the Jan. 8, 2011, shooting outside a Tucson supermarket. It also features Mark Kelly, Giffords’ husband, telling the story of when his wife left the hospital.

Executive director Crystal Kasnoff says construction will cost about $4.5 million and could begin in July.

Shooter Jared Loughner killed six and injured 13, including Giffords, who was shot in the head. He was sentenced to life in prison.
