Hours-long barricade situation draws big police presence
A large police presence was dispatched near Brawley Union High School in Brawley this morning.
Witnesses tell us that a man barricaded himself for nearly three hours.
Multiple local law enforcement agencies were dispatched to the 500 block of North Imperial Avenue.
A nearby neighbor tells us that they watched the situation unfold for several hours.
“I probably pulled up around nine, nine-ten, and it was going on then. Now its twelve o’clock and I don’t know how long they have been here before I got here. From hearing people talk, some kind of situation going on here down the alley. A friend lives down the alley, he came over and said he heard the man talking to the police about having no weapon, I’m not sure if that’s true. But they evacuated the houses close by, people that live next door were out in front were all taken away,” said Danny Hall, Brawley resident.
Later our news team was able to speak with police who explain what happened.
“This morning our communications center received a call of a verbal argument taking place in the area of 500 N. Imperial. It was reported that there were possible weapons involved, officers responded to that area and made contact with the family that was going through some emotional crisis and guns were involved in the incident,” explained Commander Houser of Brawley Police Department.
Nearby neighbors and residents were evacuated for precautionary reasons and to keep community members safe.
“It’s imperative that when we deal with these folks that are going through emotional crisis, that we use patience, that we always remember the welfare of those people. Sometimes there family members. And just try to be as patient and loving as we can,” added Houser.
“He surrendered, it was a peaceful ending,” said Hall.
Authorities arrested the man and took him into custody. No information on charges has been released.
