Resident fatally shot at apartment complex

24-year-old Anthony Ramirez is dead after a domestic disturbance turned fatal Wednesday at the Lothlorien Apartments in Yuma. The Yuma Police Department received a call regarding the disturbance around 9:00 PM. They responded immediately and found Ramirez on the ground–shot and unresponsive.

Ramirez and his girlfriend had been arguing in their first floor apartment when an unidentified passerby got involved in an argument with Ramirez and shot him in the chest.

“I guess he thought he should step in and help but he should have stayed completely out of it,” says an anonymous neighbor.

Ambulance transported Ramirez to Yuma Regional Medical Center where he died.

Ramirez and his girlfriend where both unarmed–it was the passerby who was carrying an unconcealed gun. YPD is still investigating the shooter’s motives.

“What we’re going to look at as how did the incident occur, the statements from other people in the area, and what exactly they saw,” explains Sergeant Lori Franklin with the Yuma Police Department. “If it comes up that he was defending himself, the bystander, then we’ll go from there and see what happens. If it comes out that it wasn’t self defense then again there will be another route to take.”

Neighbors say that Ramirez lived at home with his family and girlfriend and they say it was apparent that he loved them all very much.

“He was a nice young man,” says a neighbor who wishes to remain anonymous.

“Just to see someone that I saw around often just be gone was kind of crazy,” says another anonymous neighbor.
