Authorities seek suspects in Yuma arson fires

The Yuma Fire Department are on alert following a string of suspected arson fires.

“It’s maybe a couple of months that we’ve been noticing it’s going on,” said Mark Gordon, Fire Investigator for the Yuma Fire Department.

The fires have been happening on the north end of Yuma.

“Anything north of 16th and 4th, all the way to the Winterhaven side; and from Pacific to about 14th Avenue,” said Gordon.

Officials say they’re not sure if the incidents are related but various locations have been targeted including commercial and residential buildings, dumpsters and alleys.

The Fire Department says the arson cases have been turned over to the Yuma Police Department for further investigation but they’re asking the community to be extra vigilant. Abandoned properties can be some of the most vulnerable as was the case with the trailer home fires.

Fire officials suggest keeping an eye out for people hanging around vacant homes, business areas and parks, especially after hours and late at night.

Suspicious activity can be reported to 9-1-1 in the moment of the incident.
