Yuma Community Theater set to perform “West Side Story” this weekend!

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Art and community will come together as the Yuma Community Theater will perform their rendition of "West Side Story" at the Yuma Historic Theatre this weekend.

"West Side Story" is a classic retelling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. It's set in 1950's America when gentrification was taking place in the lower Manhattan.

Yuma Community Theater stage manager Katie Drewek says that these performances will be a school edition, making it easier for the audience to follow along and enjoy the play.

The play will feature 30 actors and three behind-the-scenes technicians. John Goetsch, who will play the role of "Riff" in the play, shared the positive impact that the Yuma Community Theater has had on him.

"It's been a lot of fun every time," said Goetsch. "About a year and a half ago, I did a fundraiser called Enchanted Eats for the Community Theater and I loved it ever since, so I just kept doing it."

"West Side Story" will be played at the Yuma Historic Theatre on Friday, July 25 and Saturday, July 26 at 7 p.m.

They will perform a Sunday matinee on July 27 at 2 p.m.

Tickets for each performance will be $15 and can be purchased at yctaz.org or at the Historic Yuma Theatre box office.
