Yuma City Council to vote on agreement to keep SROs at four YUHSD campuses

KYMA

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Yuma City Council members are expected to vote Wednesday night on an agreement that would keep school resource officers (SRO) at four Yuma Union High School District (YUHSD) campuses through 2029.

If approved, the agreement would assign one Yuma police officer at Yuma, Kofa, Cibola and Gila Ridge High Schools.

Their focus would be campus safety and building positive relationships with students.

Patty Arroyo, a YUHSD parent, says she hopes the partnership helps students see officers as people they can trust.

"They’re there for their safety. They're there for their well being. And to know that they can rely on them," Arroyo explained. "If you're out and about and they need help, look for a police officer. They're there to help you."

Officers will stay with each school for a minimum of two years.

The proposed agreement will run though June of 2029, with YUHSD providing funding from the program each school year.
