YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Applications for scholarships are now being accepted from under-served students throughout Arizona.

The Fiesta Sports Foundation and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona established the Empowering Diversity Scholarship to help minority residents of Arizona reach their educational objectives.

Scholarships will either help people get obtain GEDs or help them enroll in a post-secondary institution in Arizona.

There have been 119 recipients since it started five years ago, and another 28 recipients will be chosen this year.

Kristina Chumpol, the Chief of Staff & Vice President of Community Investment for the Fiesta Sports Foundation, explains, "The core of this scholarship is about access… When you do see the trajectory of these young people's lives, knowing how much this education is going to make a difference, and knowing that we can play a small part in that, it's pretty special."
