(CNN, KYMA) - AAA projects 72.2 million people will travel at least 50 miles for Independence Day, topping last year's record.

The nine-day busy travel forecast began June 27 and runs through July 5.

AAA predicts more than 61 million people will drive to their destinations over the July 4 week. Nearly six million travelers are expected to fly, and nearly five million will be on buses, trains or taking cruises.

For those renting cars, AAA says Hertz is expected to have its busiest pickup day on July 2.
