NYC’s iconic MetroCard to go out of service in January

CNN

NEW YORK (CNN, KYMA) - New Yorkers and tourists alike have shared the experience of swiping a MetroCard, often the wrong way, for almost three decades, but now, January 1 will be the end of the line for the blue and yellow card.

The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) will no longer sell MetroCards, though they'll still be accepted for now. Riders will have to switch to a contactless system called OMNY, short for One Metro New York.

The new system replaces swipe for taps of your smartphones or smartwatches, credit cards, or OMNY cards. Riders will also be able to purchase OMNY cards for $1.

The MTA says the change will save the agency $20 million a year.
