U.S. lifts restrictions on flights from South Africa

(KYMA, KECY) - Starting Friday, the travel ban on Africa is no more.

The restrictions were put in place last month keeping people from eight southern African nations, including South Africa, from traveling here.

The decision was made as the omicron variant began to spread but received harsh criticism.

The Biden Administration defended the choice saying the U.S. needed more time to understand the variant and its spread.

CDC officials have since recommended lifting the restrictions because of data showing our vaccines are effective against omicron.
