MapQuest becomes no. 1 on Apple App Store after refusing to change Lake Ontario’s name

(CNN, KYMA) - A service most people probably haven't thought about since the early 2000s seems to be making a comeback.

As of Wednesday, MapQuest remains the number one free app on Apple's App Store in the U.S., overtaking ChatGPT and Vinted.

It was also number eight on Google Play.

In a post on X Tuesday, MapQuest said, "The people have spoken. We are working."

MapQuest has refused to change Lake Ontario's name, despite President Donald Trump's executive order rebranding it as Lake America.

"We took the same approach we did with the Gulf of Mexico: be part of the conversation, and give people an app that keeps the names they're familiar with," said Doug Berger, General Manager of MapQuest, in a press release. "Hundreds of thousands of people signaled to us this weekend that we got it right, by downloading our app."

The app does feature a tool that lets users rename the lake to whatever they'd like.

The mapping service started in 1996, back when you'd have to print out your directions before leaving the house.
