Google Maps changes Lake Ontario to Lake America

(NBC, KYMA) - Lake Ontario will no longer be searchable in Google Maps.

The company announced Saturday that people using maps in the U.S. will see "Lake America" to reflect the formal name change made by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which came after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to rename the body of water amid escalating tensions with Canada over tariffs.

Google says Canadian users will see the original name, and international users will see both.

The company made a similar change to the gulf of Mexico last year, labeling it the "Gulf of America" following President Trump's executive order to rename that body of water.

Trump's executive order applies to U.S. federal usage about the lake, and does not govern what Canada, international bodies or other organizations call the lake.
