Microsoft to shut down Skype after 21 years

(NBC, KYMA/KECY) - Skype is shutting off as Microsoft announced Friday that the once very popular video-calling program will be shut down after 21 years of service.

Skype was founded in the early 2000s and picked up by Microsoft in 2011.

Skype lost steam in the 2010s and has since fallen well behind its competitors.

Microsoft is hoping to steer users to its Teams application as a replacement after they hang up on Skype for good Monday, May 5, 2025.
