NASA’s Webb Telescope releases image of planetary nebula NGC 1514

(CBS, KYMA/KECY) - NASA released a new image from the James Webb Space Telescope, giving the most detailed look at planetary nebula NGC 1514 to date.

The photo shows two stars in the center, one which shed its layers of dust and gas as it neared the end of its life cycle.

Planetary nebulas are not actually planets, but they looked like round planets through early telescopes.

Scientists have observed NGC 1514 since the late 1800s. In 2010, NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) captured NGC 1514 but with significantly less detail than the James Webb Space Telescope.

NGC 1514 is part of the Taurus constellation, about 1,500 light-years from Earth.
