Yuma County has the highest rate of Alzheimer’s in Arizona
According to a study by the Alzheimer's Association, 13.3% of Yumans 65+ have the disease
YUMA, Ariz. (KECY, KYMA) - Carol Brown with the Western Arizona Council of Governments (WACOG) works with getting older adults connected with aging programs in Yuma County
She said the startling stats show 5,800 people are living with Alzheimer's locally.
“We’re a popular community for older adults to reside in or turn into their permanent home," Brown said.
WACOG has multiple programs available to those living with Alzheimer’s, or anyone who is taking care of someone with the disease.
Such as delivered meals, at-home care, and educational programs for caretakers.
But there also are positive developments in the ongoing search for a cure.
The FDA approved a drug called 'Leqembi', which is also available for Medicare coverage.
The FDA announced the approval this month saying 'Lequembi' is “The first drug targeting the underlying disease process of Alzheimer's showing clinical benefit in the devastating disease.”
However, the drug only works with patients in the early stages of Alzheimer's, as Brown encourages all older adults to see a doctor.
“Ask for them to do the cognitive testing that can be done because an early diagnosis actually provides a better quality of life,” Brown said.
