Yuma County is traditionally one of the top earners for the American Cancer Society

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The very mention of the word cancer is disheartening. It's a disease that kills more than just its victims.

It's a fight unlike any other. Victims of cancer have to resort to using what can only be described as poisons to kill the disease and pray that they themselves survive.

In their weakened state, their family and friends fight alongside them. In many cases, millions lose that fight, leaving in its wake an unbearable loss.

But, there's hope that one-day science can rid humanity of cancer. So, in order to get there, we need research, and like with anything else, money.

Each year, Yuma County unites to fight against cancer, they come together to not only raise money but to educate and strengthen their community's bond.

How do you ask? Well, the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life event. A coordinated effort to join forces and help those fighting this deadly disease.

Traditionally, Yuma County is one of the state's top earners when it comes to the Relay for Life events. With just over 20-days left until the event, Yuma County is about halfway to its $60,000 goal.

If you've never heard of Relay for Life, it's an incredible experience. Hundreds gather together and camp out, it's a time of unity. And, there's still time if you'd like to help.

People can help by either donating, joining a team or even creating their own fundraising team, Just log on to the Yuma County Relay for Life site and register.

If you plan on attending the Relay for Life event it's set for April 22, from noon until 10 p.m. You can buy Relay for Life merchandise. You can also buy luminaries which are small bags that are decorated and have special messages on them for $10.
