New initiative offers free HIV testing across Arizona

A new statewide initiative offers Arizonans a quick, easy, free way to get tested for HIV.

The Arizona Department of Health Services is teaming up with Aunt Rita’s Foundation to increase the accessibility of free screening. Thanks to collaborations with Sonora Quest Laboratories, Walgreen’s and Albertson’s /Safeway pharmacies free tests will now be available at 116 different locations in cities and towns both large and small.

Free test vouchers are available to any Arizonan over the age of 18 who has not received an HIV screening in the past 12-months. To get a voucher, simply go to GetTestedAZ.org, complete the on-line form, and chose the most convenient testing location.

Be aware, protocols do differ by location. Sonora Quest Laboratories will take a blood draw. Results normally take 3-4 days. Notifications will be delivered either by mail, or by secure customer portal.

Walgreen’s and Albertson’s /Safeway pharmacies use a 20-minute rapid test. Results are delivered in person.

Those receiving a negative result will be referred to a free mail-order condom service. They’ll also get connected to PrEP providers. PrEP is a drug that is 96% effecting in preventing the transmission of HIV. It’s covered by most insurance, including AHCCCS .

Persons testing positive will be linked to medical care through their existing insurance, or through statewide programs. They’ll also get access to education and support.

Aunt Rita’s Foundation spearheaded the push for increased HIV testing in Arizona. It’s a non-profit group that promotes HIV awareness and education. Since 2005 the foundation has provided more than $2-million in grant money for partner agencies in Arizona.

For more information on free testing, or the other services Aunt Rita’s provides visit www.auntritas.org or call its HIVAZ Connect hotline at (602) 903-1221.
