Optimism in the U.S. economy slightly fades amid tensions with Iran

(CNN, KYMA/KECY) - Americans are becoming less optimistic about the economy.

The Conference Board says its latest consumer confidence index fell more than five points, to a reading of 93.

The research group says values below 80 often signal a looming recession.

May's report showed consumers had been feeling better after an agreement was secured between the U.S. and China to lower massive tariffs.

But the new index shows those feelings have waned as uncertainty over President Donald Trump's economic policy continues and tensions in the Middle East rise.

The survey's cutoff was days before the U.S. bombed nuclear sites in Iran.
