New auto tariffs could raise prices, but some dealers see an opportunity

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - President Donald Trump's proposed 25% tariffs on imported cars and auto parts could have a major impact on the auto industry, affecting both consumers and local businesses.

While supporters of the tariffs believe they will bring manufacturing jobs back to the United States, many fear the added costs will ultimately be passed down to car buyers.

Carlos Mattice, a local salesman, says the tariffs could raise prices on everything from raw materials to finished vehicles.

"Wood, aluminum…everything we import, even from Europe, Mexico, other countries that will affect the pockets of American consumers and business owners," Mattice said.

Industry analysts predict that prices on new vehicles could rise by thousands of dollars as manufacturers adjust to higher costs on imported parts and materials.

While the tariffs could make new cars less affordable, some dealers who specialize in used vehicles believe this could actually drive more business their way.

"More people are going to be looking for used cars than brand new," said Javier Gonzalez, who owns American Auto Car Sales in Yuma. "It's going to affect something, but actually, I expect it to be beneficial to our business."

Gonzalez says the shift could lead more buyers to focus on practicality over luxury.

"Some people just like to be keeping up with the Joneses, but with the way the economy is now, people have to think sensible and dependable," he said.

Even for those who still want to buy new, the price increases could be staggering.

"What a Ford Raptor costs right now is what we paid for our house 20 years ago," Gonzalez added.

Experts say the tariffs could create a lasting ripple effect across the industry, impacting not just car dealerships but also mechanics, parts suppliers, and auto repair shops that rely on affordable imported parts.

While the debate over the tariffs continues, one thing remains certain: Car buyers may have to rethink their options in the coming months.
