Allegiant to acquire Sun County in $1.5 billion deal

(NBC, KYMA) - Two low-cost airlines are merging in a $1.5 billion deal as Allegiant Air says it plans to buy Sun Country airlines.

Both companies operate as low-cost carriers in the United States. If approved, the combined airline would serve about 175 cities nationwide.

The deal still needs clearance from federal regulators and approval from Sun Country shareholders.

The companies expect the merger to close in the second half of the year. For now, airline officials say travelers should not expect any immediate changes.
