Amazon to layoff 14,000 corporate workers

(NBC, KYMA) - Amazon says it is laying off 14,000 corporate workers in order stay "nimble" as the company looks at the growth of artificial intelligence (AI).

In a statement Monday, Amazon's top HR executive said AI is the "most transformative technology we've seen since the internet," and said the company needs to be "organized more leanly, with fewer layers" to move more quickly for their customers.

The news is the latest in a wave of work force reductions among tech and retails companies.

For instance, Target cut 1,000 jobs last week, Meta eliminated 600 jobs Wednesday, and Microsoft laid off 9,000 workers in July.

According to Amazon's latest filings, the company employs about 1.5 million people, with about 350,000 working in corporate roles.

The company says it will assist impacted employees as the layoffs are carried out.
