The Better Business Bureau is warning taxpayers about scammers and other illegal practices
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - As we near the April 15, tax deadline many Americans who have been procrastinating may be more susceptible to scams. Con artists will use a taxpayer's greed against them, posing as tax preparers and offering large returns.
The Better Business Bureau wants to warn taxpayers, both about possible scams and possibly less than legal practices by tax preparers. John Hessinger with the BBB says like with anything else, do your homework.
You're entrusting your tax preparer with the most vital of information. So, Hessinger says to read the fine print and look for any added fees.
Among the most popular scams are IRS impersonating scams. Scammers threaten would-be victims with possible fines and jail time if the victim doesn't pay immediately.
Hessinger wants to remind consumers that the Internal Revenue Service will make contact via a certified letter. The IRS offers a fully accessible website.
It's recommended that you create an account on the IRS website, where any infractions will be visible. Also, the BBB offers its Scam Tracker website where you can research all the scams in your area and even report a scam if you feel you've been victimized.
