Army Secretary Dan Driscoll resigns from his position

(CBS, KYMA) - Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has submitted his resignation to President Donald Trump.

The resignation comes after months of friction with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Anna Kelly, a White House spokesperson, confirmed Secretary Driscoll's resignation to CBS News Monday.

"Secretary Driscoll has been highly effective in advancing President Trump's agenda to Make America Strong Again at the Department of the Army by providing outstanding leadership during historic military operations, restoring an emphasis on readiness and lethality, assisting with negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, and more," Kelly said.

"The United States Army is more powerful than ever thanks to his work alongside the Commander-in-Chief and Secretary of War," she added.

Earlier this year, Secretary Hegseth fire Gen. Randy George, who was the Army Chief of Staff, and two other generals, including Christopher Donahue.

Back in November of last year, Driscoll spoke with Margaret Brennan on Face the Nation, talking about a variety of topics ranging from the conflict between the U.S. and Venezuela prior to former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's capture, the government ending the shutdown, and more.

Driscoll is a U.S. Army Veteran and a longtime personal friend to Vice President JD Vance.
