Graham Platner wins Maine Democratic Senate nomination

BLUE HILL, Maine (CBS, KYMA) - CBS News projects Graham Platner (D) will win the Maine Democratic Senate primary, setting up the fall matchup with incumbent Sen. Susan Collins (R) as was widely expected.

Platner gave victory remarks at an election watch party in his hometown of Blue Hill, Maine Tuesday evening.

Platner, a progressive Democrat, has been plagued by several controversies, including allegations of "unsettling behavior" from former girlfriends.

On Tuesday, Sen. Collins, who will now face Platner in the general election in November, called the allegations against Platner "extremely troubling and serious."

Despite the controversies, Platner has garnered support from progressive allies in Congress.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) said Platner is running an "extraordinary strong campaign," and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) told reporters, "it is time to have someone from Maine who will represent the people of Maine instead of trying to protect Donald Trump."
