President Trump withdraws tariff threat towards European countries

(NBC, KYMA) - President Donald Trump is withdrawing a threat to impose tariffs on a number of European countries over their stance on Greenland.

The president says he has reached the framework of a future deal, with respect to Greenland, after meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Davos, Switzerland.

President Trump made the announcement in a social media post Wednesday afternoon.

The tariffs were set to take effect on February 1 unless the European Union allowed the United States to take control of Greenland.

Details of the deal have yet to be released.

The president wrote that discussions are underway concerning the Golden Dome as it pertains to the island nation, and said further information will be made available as those discussions progress.

Over the weekend, Trump said he would hit Denmark, the United Kingdom and other countries involved in nato exercises with a 10% tariff, and that the tariffs would increase to 25% if those countries didn't comply with his demands.
