(NBC, KYMA) - Michael Reagan, the eldest son of former President Ronald Reagan, has died at the age of 80.

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute announced Reagan's death Tuesday, calling his passing a "profound loss to all who knew him."

A cause of death was not immediately provided.

Michael Reagan was born in 1945 and adopted just hours after his birth by Ronald Reagan and his then-wife, actor Jane Wyman.

He was a successful author, nationally syndicated radio talk show host, and public speaker.

The Presidential Foundation noted that Reagan was also a "steadfast guardian of his father's legacy" who remained closely connected to the Reagan Library for decades.
