President Trump announces plans to build new warship bearing his name
(NBC, KYMA) - The U.S. Navy is developing a new class of warship that will bear President Donald Trump's name.
President Trump announced the new ships at an event at his West Palm Beach home Monday.
"As you know, we're desperately in need of ships. Our ships are some of them have gotten old and tired and obsolete, and we're going to go the exact opposite direction," the president remarked.
He was joined by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of the Navy John Phelan.
According to the president, two new classes of ships are planned that will be larger and more powerful than the largest current ships.
"Once completed, these new 30 to 40,000 ton plus vessels will be the flagships of the American naval fleet, and there'll be never there's never been anything built like that," Trump shared.
Trump also took questions from the press on the release of files related to Jeffrey Epstein, lashing out at Congress over the release, and calling it a distraction from his administration's work.
"This is what the Democrats, mostly Democrats, and a couple of bad Republicans, are asking for himself. They give me their photos of me too. Everybody was friendly with this guy, either friendly or not friendly. But then, you know he's around. He was all over Palm Beach and other places. The head of Harvard was his best friend, Larry Summers, and Bill Clinton was a friend of his. But everybody was, I actually threw him out of Mar-a-Lago."

The president also repeated his intention to attack alleged drug traffickers on land and continued to escalate his rhetoric against Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro.
"We have a massive Armada form the biggest we've ever had, and by far the biggest we've ever had in South America. He can do whatever he wants, whatever he wants to do, if he wants to do something, if he plays tough, it'll be the last time he's ever able to play tough," Trump said.
The president said he will meet with American contractors later this week to negotiate a timeline for the ships' construction.
