President Trump files lawsuit against BBC for defamation

(NBC, KYMA) - President Donald Trump has filed a major lawsuit against an international news organization, alleging election interference and defamation tied to a documentary released ahead of the 2024 vote.

The civil complaint accuses the BBC of producing what it calls a false, deceptive, and malicious portrayal of President Trump in a panorama documentary that aired just one week before the 2024 election.

According to the lawsuit, the documentary, titled "Trump: A Second Chance", was part of what Trump's attorneys describe as a deliberate effort to interfere with and influence the outcome of the election to his detriment.

The suit specifically alleges the program was edited in a misleading way to suggest that during his January 6, 2021 speech outside the White House, Trump explicitly urged supporters to attack the U.S. Capitol, a claim the president denies.

The BBC says it will defend the lawsuit, which is seeking $5 billion in damages for each of its two counts: Defamation and violation of Florida's Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act.
