Senate passes bipartisan bill to end government shutdown

WASHINGTON (NBC, KYMA) - The Senate has passed a bipartisan bill to reopen the government and bring an end to the record-long shutdown.

The final vote was 60 to 40 with eight Democrats joining Republicans to break the stalemate. Every Republican voted in favor, except Senator Rand Paul (R-KY).

The measure now heads to the House, which could take it up as early as Wednesday. President Donald Trump says he supports the deal.

In addition, the package includes funding for SNAP benefits through next September and keeps much of the government running on a short-term basis through January 30.

The Senate's approval came after hours of voting and debate to finalize the compromise.
