Trump Administration to end practice of automatic renewal for immigrants’ work permits
(CNN, KYMA) - The automatic renewal of work permit extensions for immigrants is coming to an end.
This move from the Trump Administration could potentially leave thousands of currently employed people in limbo.
Migrants who are in the U.S. legally have been granted the ability to work while their applications for protection or benefits were being processed.
Because the paperwork is often lengthy and delayed, U.S. officials have usually allowed an extension of 540 days, but it will no longer be the case starting Thursday.
According to a press release, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Joseph Edlow explained it this way saying in part, "All aliens must remember that working in the United States is a privilege, not a right."
