Federal officials launches investigation into Jack Smith
(NBC, KYMA/KECY) - Federal officials are launching an investigation into former Special Counsel Jack Smith
Smith is being accused by the Office of Special Counsel (OSC) of violating the Hatch Act, a law that prohibits government officials from engaging in certain political activities.
The independent agency is separate from the Special Counsel's Office formerly lead by Smith, who was appointed by the Department of Justice.
It affirmed it would investigate Smith after Republican Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas accused him of "unprecedented interference in the 2024 election."
So far, no specific evidence of wrongdoing has been presented.
The OSC can not bring forth criminal charges to prosecute officials who violate the act, but can seek disciplinary action for a federal employee.
