Lawmakers vote to table Texas congressman’s article of impeachment against President Trump

WASHINGTON (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - Texas Congressman Al Green unsuccessfully introduced an article of impeachment against President Donald Trump Tuesday.

The Democratic lawmaker introduced the resolution, accusing the president of failing to notify or seek authorization from Congress before the U.S. launched strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites over the weekend.

Lawmakers voted 344-79 to table Congressman Green's resolution.

His article of impeachment introduction attempt came after minority leader Hakeem Jeffries avoided a question of whether he would take seriously any effort to impeach President Trump over not consulting Congress before ordering the strikes on Iran.

All 79 votes against tabling were Democrats, and by tabling the resolution, the measure is effectively killed and will not come up again.

"We are at the intersection of democracy and autocracy. I rise to announce that at this moment in time I have filed HRes 537...HRes 537 is a privilege resolution. HRes 537 has been filed because I believe that the President of the United States has committed an impeachable act.

Mr. Speaker, I take no delight in what I'm doing. I do this because I love my country. I do this because I understand that the Constitution is going to be meaningful or it will be meaningless. I do it because I understand that the President of the United States of America has a duty to consult Congress before taking this country to war. I do it because no one person should have the power to take over 300 million people to war without consulting with the Congress of the United States of America."

Rep. Al Green (D-Texas)

The congressman is no stranger to introducing impeachment articles against the president as he has done so numerous times, including last month, but those were referred to the Judiciary Committee and have gone nowhere.
