Senate report details security failures in Capitol riot
(KYMA, KECY/ CNN) - A new Senate report reveals several security breakdowns ahead of the January 6th attack on the Capitol.
The bipartisan report was conducted by the Senate Homeland Security and Rules Committees and it finds that Trump supporters had posted several violent threats online in the days and weeks leading up to the attack.
The report also says intelligence officials struggled with how to differentiate between real threats and protected political speech.
It notes that law enforcement officials relied on information on past rallies that remained non-violent and that they were worried about clashes between groups but did not focus on violence towards a building.
The report also concluded even though Capitol police were aware of the potential for violence, they did not get that information to all officials who should have known.
The Committee did not examine former President Donald Trump's potential role in inciting the riot.
