Letters from the Yuma County Recorder’s Office cause confusion

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Yuma County Recorder's Office says there was a glitch in the system where proof of citizenship was not requested from voters who registered to vote nearly three decades ago.

Yuma County Recorder David Lara says the letters were sent to over 3,000 locals who registered to vote after January 4, 2005. However, their license was issued prior to October 1, 1996.

They're are now notifying voters of this error in hopes they take the steps to fix it.

Lara says, "So, we had to notify the voters so they're not surprised because if they don't show the proof of residency, they only get their federal only. They can't vote on local elections."

Lara says this error wasn't intentional and urges those who have received this letter to respond to avoid any voting issues: "It is not something we caused or created. We're asking for the public to help out and once we smooth this out everything will be fine. We hope no one get offended or angry were just trying to do our jobs."

If you have any questions about how to clarify your status of voter registration, you can head to the Yuma County Recorder's Office and they will assist you with any questions you may have.
