California gubernatorial candidate unveils plan to create Hollywood jobs

LOS ANGELES (KYMA, NBC) - San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, who is also running for governor of California, held a press conference Monday.

According to a press release obtained by NBC News, Mayor Mahan unveiled his plan to create Hollywood jobs.

Mahan said the plan is to keep production in California, strengthen California's competitiveness, and support the workers, small businesses and communities who power the entertainment industry.

Last year, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) announced the expansion of the state's Film and TV Tax Credit Program, going from $330 million to $750 million, in order to boost "one of California's hallmark industries, Los Angeles' local economy, and thousands of industry jobs."

Last month, Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) hosted "Lights, Camera, Competition: Promoting American Film Production," highlighting "the importance of bolstering American film production" as well as tackle the challenges the industry faces.

These include "generous tax incentives provided by other countries" with Sen. Schiff saying he's working to advance bipartisan legislation to establish a federal film incentive.

Mahan is one of five Democratic candidates running for governor of California, along with Katie Porter, Tom Steyer, Xavier Becerra and Antonio Villaraigosa.
