Rep. Kevin Kiley resigns as member of House Republican Conference

(NBC, KYMA) - Rep. Kevin Kiley has resigned as a member of the House Republican Conference.

The announcement was read on the House floor by the clerk Wednesday afternoon.

The California representative announced, earlier this month, he would be running for election in November as an Independent, but said he planned on finishing out this term as a Republican.

Per House rules, Rep. Kiley will automatically be removed from his committee assignments.

With Kiley leaving the Republican Conference, the House membership breakdown becomes 217 Republicans, 214 Democrats and one Independent.
