California lawmakers introduce bill to create park in honor of César Chávez

(KYMA, KECY) - A new push is underway to honor civil rights leader César Chávez and the farmworker movement.

According to a press release obtained by KYMA, Congressman Raul Ruiz and Senator Alex Padilla introduced a bill to create the César E. Chávez and the Farmworker Movement National Historical Park.

The park is said to preserve key sites in California and Arizona, including Forty Acres in Delano and the Santa Rita Center in Phoenix.

The legistlation also calls for a study to establish the "Farmworker Peregrinación National Historic Trail," following the path of Chávez's 1966 march from Delano to Sacramento.

Supporters say the move would ensure the National Park System better represents the contributions of farmworkers and the fight for labor rights.
